ROTARY GOES WILDIn support of the newest avenue of focus, that of environment sustainability, the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair is launching its newest adventure, 'Rotary Goes Wild'. Zoom in on Sunday March 27 from 1-3 pm and discover how you can support a native habitat in your own garden. The lineup of speakers will discuss pollinator gardens, monarchs, native bees and of course the importance of planting native. There will also be a draw or 2 for a 'wee bee house' for the solitary bees in your garden. Stay tuned for more details. |
OPERATION POLLINATIONWindsor St Clair recently signed the Operation Pollination resolution, and pledge to become the first club in Super District 6400, and the first club in Canada to do so. Operation Pollination is an inclusive partnership project initiated by announcing a simple Pollinator Resolution. The project is achieved by recruiting a diverse array of partners to engage in pollinator habitat restoration or education activities by signing a simple Pollinator Pledge form. Any organization can get involved in Operation Pollination and it doesn’t cost anything to join the cause, aside from the time and resources you devote to achieving your pollinator project. This important environmental initiative is a simple and impactful way for small groups of people to make a real difference in their efforts to support the vital biodiversity in the local region. Our Club is Moving!Our club is moving! After many good years meeting weekly at Community Living Windsor, our club has approved a new location. Starting August 5, 2021, we will call the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Tecumseh our new home. The exact address is 14 Amy Croft Dr, Lakeshore, ON N9K 0A1. Members (and visiting Rotarians/guests) will still have the option of attending in-person or via Zoom. As always, we hope that members will arrive early to have breakfast and time to catch-up with others and the formal meeting will occur from 7:15 – 8:15am. Breakfast continues to be $15.00.  |
MEETINGS ARE VIRTUALDue to COVID-19, our face-to-face weekly Thursday morning meetings are suspended but you are invited to attend our meeting on the zoom platform. Call or email us (details below) and we would be pleased to have you as our guest. We have interesting speakers and engaging discussions at every meeting. We are looking forward to some exciting meetings over August. On the 13th we will be celebrating four students who will be receiving bursaries to continue their education at the university level. All four are excellent high school graduates and we look forward as we are sure they will be making an impact in the future. The Club has several key fund raising initiatives, not the least of which is participation at Breakaway Gaming Center. The Rotarians of Windsor-St. Clair have fun being part of this Center and appreciate being part of their fundraising opportunities. In addition to bursary opportunities, we are raising funds to promote and support many initiatives within our community. On August 20th, our District Governor, Noel Jackson will be joining our meeting for his official visit - we are looking forward to hearing from Noel as well as sharing directions of our club with him. Noel has been a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton since 2004 and was the club president in 2012-2013, a year in which his club won the Hedke. He was given the Council of Governor’s (COG) award in 2015 for his exceptional service to Rotary and the District. He served as Assistant Governor for Area 6 from 2014-2017. Noel is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Major Donor and a Benefactor to the Rotary Foundation. Noel has been on International Rotary projects in Nicaragua, Haiti, Ethiopia, India, Ghana, and Tanzania.

Gleaners 24 Hour Rotary EventStarting at 4:00 pm on August 16th and going for the next 24 hours, the 11 Rotary Clubs in Essex County and Windsor will take turns supporting food rescue and food security at Gleaners in Leamington. We are looking forward to processing the fresh produce generously donated by farmers and food producers.  Southwestern Ontario Gleaners is a group of dedicated people who ship surplus dehydrated vegetables, in the form of soup mixes, to vulnerable communities around the world. They have been in operation since 2014. It is an interdenominational organization that provides free dehydrated vegetable mix and dehydrated fruit for distribution to local community partners and reputable relief agencies around the world. |

Sushil Kumar Gupta selected to be 2020-21 Rotary presidentSushil Kumar Gupta, of the Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest, Delhi, India, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2020-21. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested. Gupta wants to increase Rotary’s humanitarian impact as well as the diversity of its membership. |

The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. |

A challenge to clean the world's riversIn 2009, Salvador Rico stood in the waters of the Russian River in Northern California with other members of the Rotary Club of South Ukiah. They were there for a river cleanup, during which they removed toilets, refrigerators, car parts, and garbage. That event led to an ambitious initiative called Cleaning the Rivers of the World. After participating in the Russian River cleanup, Rico’s thoughts turned to the Ameca River, which flows past his father’s farm in western Mexico. That was where, he believed, his oldest sister contracted the poliovirus that killed her in the 1960s. |

Multi-Club Meeting September 12The Rotary Clubs of Windsor and Essex County met at the Ciaciaro Club to hear the CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital David Musyj, CEO of Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare Janice Kaffer and Dave Cooke, Co-chair, Program and Services Steering Committee update us on the progress of the mega-hospital. They provided us with a history of the idea of a single regional hospital and the many reasons this area needs a new hospital, not the least of which is the age of the buildings; some of the oldest in the province. They took us through the stages of the process and where it currently stands.  David Musyj encouraged us to keep advocating for the new hospital with our MPPs, because this project is in competition for other hospitals in the province. Our advantage to getting a new hospital is the widespread community support. |
Rotarian of the YearBob Morand was named Rotarian of the Year 2016-2017. Bob was Debra's "wing man" as she put it; available to help out whenever she needed help.

Past President Debra Harshaw's EventPast President Debra Harshaw and club members enjoyed a sunny Sunday afternoon at Muscedere Winery drinking wine and eating pizza. Debra received a caricature portrait signed by club members. In addition, she received red tape, scissors and a stack of papers to read for her next project with the City of Windsor.  Assistant Governor Aruna Koushik and her spouse, Shiva also shared in our fellowship. Bob Morand was named "Rotarian of the Year" for assisting Debra throughout the year in all the activities and being there when she needed him. In keeping with our green theme as a club, P.P. Deb gave her board members an environmentally friendly gift of honey and solitary bee's home.

DG Rick Caron visits our ClubRick Caron's Talk Sept 7 District Governor Rick Caron visited our Club this week, accompanied by Assistant Governor Aruna Koushik. He talked about what Rotary is doing internationally and at the district level. He praised our Club for all the good works we are engaged in and said that engagement is more important in Rotary than meeting attendance. With the new RI guidelines regarding attendance we are free to choose how we run our Club and our level of comfort with this. Dr. Caron, a mathematics professor at the University of Windsor has an impressive background both professionally and in Rotary. He was the Group Study Exchange Leader to Hungary and has been on many Rotary trips to Tanzania. He is married to Wendy and has two adult children. His theme this year, "To Boldly Go" is represented in his Star War theme and is consistent with RI President Ian Riseley's theme to "Make a Difference". DG Rick encouraged us to attend the District Conference at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island and explained the "first time" attendee's discount. He talked about the International Conference in Toronto next year and joked that if we were going to attend one of them, it should be his conference. After the formal meeting, the Board met with DG Rick and ADG Aruna to inform him of our goals and plans and what we have already accomplished. |

ROTARY AUCTION ON TV COGECO RAISES OVER $53,000
When the 2014 Rotary Auction on TV COGECO concluded early this morning, $53,207 was raised by the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair to undertake important service work in our community.
"Without the generosity of local business donating the gifts, we wouldn't have an auction. I would like to thank them all for their community-minded spirit. This year we received more than 400 items. More than 50 volunteers, both Rotarians and others, who staffed the telephones and worked behind the scenes, deserve to be congratulated for a fine job. And the Windsor and Essex County community deserves a pat on the back for coming through for us in these difficult economic times. Volunteers were instrumental in promoting the auction and also deserves a vote of thanks," says 2014 Auction Chair, John Weese.
The Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair uses the money raised to benefit the community, and beyond. In the past, monies raised at the auction have benefited projects like the Ganatchio Trail, Shanfield Shores, the Rotary Roundabout and the Rotary boundary-free playground in the Town of Tecumseh.
This was the 28th year that the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair has partnered with TV Cogeco to present a television auction and plans will soon be underway for the event next year. "The staff at Cogeco does a fabulous job for us," says Weese, "and as soon as we close the books on 2014, planning will begin for next year."

HUMANITARIAN AWARD PRESENTED.JPG) The Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair has honoured Amy Johnson, founder of Cuddles Clothing for Kids, with a Humanitarian Award. “This award recognizes a person or business in Windsor or Tecumseh for exceptional humanitarian work either locally or globally,” explained Mary Lou Decou, Club President. “Amy’s commitment to reducing the impacts of poverty on children in Windsor-Essex County is remarkable and inspiring.” In the photo, she is presented the award by Carlo Abati.
“Having accepted help from others during a difficult period in my life, I wanted to pay it forward, but had difficulty finding an organization that would accept clothing donations,” Johnson, a full time law student and single mother of six, revealed when she was the Club’s guest speaker last year. “We aim to help bridge the gap when parents are struggling to manage covering the basics.”

MARY LOU DECOU INDUCTED AS PRESIDENT FOR 2014-2015M
 ary Lou Decou has been inducted as the President of the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair for the 2014/2015 Rotary year. A Rotarian since 1996 in three different Rotary districts, Mary Lou has been an active and contributing member of Rotary Windsor-St. Clair since 2010. She previously served as the President of the Rotary Club of St. Catharine’s Lakeshore in 2004/2005. Mary Lou, an epidemiologist, was named Rotarian of the Year in 2012/2013, chaired the Rotary TV Auction in 2012, and is a multiple recipient of the Paul Harris fellow.Rotary International President Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius who said: "It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness." Mary Lou has taken this theme and established a number of goals.
“I hope that members will not only reflect on the history and successes of our great club, but look ahead to see where we can build on these successes,” she says. “We want a healthy club that focuses on new opportunities for fellowship, fun, service and fundraising. This year, I want our membership to celebrate Rotary. We believe in what Rotary stands for and value what we can contribute.”

BBQ AT CHEZ WEESTERThis past weekend friends and family gathered to provide the Ganatchio Trail with some TLC - something we do every year and something the community really appreciates. Following the cleanup, later in the day, participants and others gathered at CHEZ WEESTER to celebrate the cleanup but also to celebrate the 29th birthday of Club President Nominee John Weese. ERCA & ROTARY LAUNCH THE SCAR If you think a mud run is fun, then get ready, because in 2014, the Essex Region Conservation Authority and the Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair will team up to launch the region’s first multi-sport adventure race – The SCAR (South Coast Adventure Race).
“The South Coast Adventure Race promises to be nothing short of spectacular,” enthuses Danielle Breault Stuebing, ERCA’s Director of Community Outreach Services. “The 70 kilometre course will take you through beautiful conservation areas, along rural roads and down gorgeous creeks – expect the unexpected during this 5 – 8 hour race course.”

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR FOR 2012-2013 Mary Lou Decou has been honoured as Rotarian of the Year for 2012-2013 by the Windsor-St. Clair Rotary Club. A member since 2009, she presently serves as President-Elect and will assume leadership of the club July 1, 2014. Before joining the Windsor St. Clair Club, she was a member for many years of the Rotary Club of St. Catharines-Lakeshore where she served as President and before that a member of Rotary in Timmins, Ontario.Since arriving in Windsor, Mary Lou has epitomized the values of Rotary International and service to the community through her involvement with club activities on all levels. She has participated in committee work, played a key role in major club projects and can always be depended on when something needs to be done. Most notably, she headed the 2013 Rotary Auction on TV Cogeco, the club major fundraiser, where she exhibited a dedication and commitment to success which is unparalleled.

Club honoured at Rotary Conference
At the D6400 Conference in Chicago, Windsor St.Clair members can be proud of the club – and all we do in the community. We received the Presidential Citation with Distinction for 2010-2011 and also District Recognition for the "Most Innovative Club Social Event" .
Additionally, we were awarded second place in The Frank Devlyn Exemplary Public Relations award; we made it on the Dick Hedke Honor Roll; we received the Dick Hedke Public Relations Avenue of Service award; and we received THE HUGH ARCHER AWARD for the best new club project - Birthday in a Bag! Spring Cleaning for the Ganatchio Trail
Thanks to all club
members and friends who came out to the Ganatchio Trail on May 7 for the
annual clean-up. The weather was perfect and everyone went about the task of picking
up garbage with much enthusiasm. The club organizes a clean-up and facelift to
ensure the trail remains enjoyable to the tremendous amount of people who have
come to depend on it for recreation and exercise. Following the clean-up, a BBQ
lunch was enjoyed by all participants.

COMMUNITY AWARD FOR PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING 2014-2015 The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) at General Amherst H.S. is the 2014-2015 recipient of the WINDSOR ST. CLAIR COMMUNITY AWARD FOR PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING. The club has been an active force for change in the school and the local community. The group is committed to being open-minded, accepting others, celebrating diversity, and treating others equally. The Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair Community Award for Peace and Understanding is awarded annually to an organization that has made an outstanding to peace and conflict resolution. Receiving the $500 award on behalf of the school was TREVOR KLUNDERT who provided an overview of the group and their activities and what they have been involved in both within the school and in the community.

VICKI HOUSTON NAMED PRESIDENT OF WINDSOR ST.CLAIR ROTARY CLUB
Vicki Houston has been named President of the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair for the 2013/2014 Rotary year. A Rotarian since 2010, Vicki has been actively involved in many facets of club operations, notably the New Generations committee and the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.
The International Rotary Theme for this coming year is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Vicki intends to build upon this theme throughout the year. “The focus for our club will be “Participate”,” she adds. “When we have club members participate in our in wonderful projects, we change lives for people in Windsor and Essex County and other countries in the world.”
Vicki lives with her husband Peter of 23 years and her 19 year old son Jeremy in Windsor.

SHELLY DUBEN WINS PRESTIGIOUS SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD
“We are extremely proud of Shelly and her many accomplishments,” explains Chris Woodrow, President of the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair. “She is a most deserving recipient of this award.” A Rotarian since 2004, she served as the club’s President in 2007 through to 2009. A teacher by vocation, Shelly has taught a broad range of subjects including math, physics, science, art, English and history. She served as the Head of Guidance at Forster Secondary School for several years, and is now a Teacher Consultant with the Greater Essex County District School Board. |
ROTARY WINDSOR-ST. CLAIR TEAMS UP WITH WINDSOR FIRE & RESCUE
Firefighters and Rotarians will blitz the city with the Wake Up, Get a Working Smoke Alarm program and work together to conduct an increased number of home fire safety inspections, provide educational materials on fire safety, encourage homeowners to have an escape plan in case of fire, and to provide and install a smoke detector. As well, Rotarians will have the chance to let the community know more about Rotary and our commitment to community service.

ROTARIANS GEARING UP FOR WORLD POLIO DAY Rotarians are getting ready to launch events linked to World Polio Day, 24 October, in support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Led by RI President Sakuji Tanaka, International PolioPlus Committee Chair Robert Scott, and Rotary Foundation Trustee Stephanie Urchick, delegates to the Rotary institute for zones 24-32 in Vancouver, British Columbia will take part in a downtown walk and rally on 19 October. One hundred of the participants will carry signs bearing the End Polio Now message. |
LOCAL PROJECTS ANNOUNCED The Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair is excited to initiate three local major service projects in partnership with several organizations.
“Last February, our club held an open house to celebrate our past achievements and to identify new potential partners and projects,” explains Chris Woodrow, Club President. “As a result, we generated nearly twenty new opportunities for service. These ideas were evaluated based on our mission to ensure a balanced suite of programming with emphasis on helping the less fortunate of all ages whose needs are not met through government programs or other charities.” |
WINDSOR ST.CLAIR AWARDS BURSARIES
The financial burden of post secondary education will be lightener for eleven students to whom the Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair will award bursaries. Students exhibiting outstanding academic achievement, diverse volunteer activities, and financial need were selected as recipients of this bursary. Further consideration was given to those students who demonstrated a commitment to the Rotary International motto of Service above Self.

He was honored as Rotarian of the year in 2009. |

WINDSOR ST. CLAIR CELEBRATES ROTARY BIRTHDAY IN STYLEThe Rotary Club of Windsor St.-Clair took the occasion of Rotary’s 107th birthday to host an open house to generate ideas for new projects to help the Windsor-Essex community. DISTRICT LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO TEACH ESL
Rotary Clubs across Windsor and
Essex County are looking for volunteers to head to South Africa in July 2012 to
work with English teachers.
The District 6400 Vocational Training Team will help English as a Second Language teachers in South Africa who are preparing their students to write post-secondary entrance exams. The District needs four to six volunteers who have a background in education, particularly in working with ESL students. Individuals who are not members of a Rotary Club are urged to apply. 2012 AUCTION RAISES $47,500
When the 26th annual Rotary Auction on TV Cogeco concluded earlier this month, $47,500 was raised by the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (Windsor-Essex County Chapter) to undertake important service work in our community.

Paul Charbonneau to Head Club for 2011-2012
The gavel changed hands but not households today as Paul Charbonneau took over from his wife Phyllis as President of the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair for the 2011/2012 Rotary Year. Paul, a Rotarian since 2005, along with Phyllis, who served as club President for the 2010/2011 Rotary Year, have been extremely involved in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program both at the club and district levels, as well as chairing many of the club’s fundraising initiatives. Paul, a resident of the Essex region since 1982, is owner of HCA Mindbox, an award winning marketing communicationsfirm. Over the past 24 years, Paul and his firm have donated in excess of $250,000 of cash and in-kind marketing services to Not for Profit causes in the Windsor-Essex Region. |
Heart and Stroke receives Auction proceeds
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (Windsor-Essex
County Chapter) received close to $29,000 at the Thursday, March 24, 2011
meeting of the Windsor St. Clair Rotary Club. The monies were raised at the
2010 Rotary Auction on TV COGECO, a partnership between the Windsor St. Clair
Rotary Club and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Nijola raises more than $10,600
Thanks to everyone who participated in the
2011 Nijola Golf Tournament - more than $10,600 was rasied for club projects and activities
Although
conditions were a 'little' wet, the tournament was bigger and better
than than ever, and provided us all with a tremendous opportunity to
raise
additional funds for club projects and initiatives - and at the same
time
remember a Rotarian - Nijola Giedriunas - who's dedication to her
community
exemplified the Rotary International motto of Service Above Self. At the
end of the day approximately $10,600 was raised - and tremendous efforts
by all concerned particularly the Golf Committee and also Todd and
Michelle Grondin who roganized the event.

Michael Duben installed as Governor
Michael Duben from the Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair is the 2011-2012 Governor for Rotary International District 6400 which encompasses 50 clubs - in Essex County in Ontario and Wayne, Monroe and Lenawee counties in Michigan. As Governor, he will lead more than 1,650 women and men who comprise District 6400, providing vision and leadership and confirming the District as one of the very best across the globe. |

Rotary Auction on TV COGECO. The telephones are silent and the many
volunteers who made the event successful are getting a much deserved rest. When the auction concluded at midnight on
Saturday, over $68,612 was raised by the Rotary Club of
Windsor-St. Clair and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (Windsor-Essex
County Chapter) to undertake important service work in our community.

Club raises dollars for Haiti and ShelterBox
As Rotarians, we want to provide assistance to Haiti just as we did for the Tsunami, Katrina and numerous other natural disasters. Disaster relief teams are arriving daily, including many Rotarians. Search and Rescue teams with rescue dogs from Canada and the United States are already hard at work searching for victims.

Local Seniors say Wii® would like to play
It's was "Game On Everyone!" earlier this week, as members of the Windsor-St. Clair Rotary Club challenged residents of Banwell Gardens to rounds of boxing, bowling and golf courtesy of the Nintendo Wii Game System the Club donated to the facility. This is one of five Wii Systems members of Windsor-St. Clair Rotary Club presented to local seniors residences this month. |
YMCA honours Michael and Shelly Duben
Congratulations to Windsor St. Clair Rotarians Michael and Shelly Duben who last week were awarded YMCA Peace Medals. They were recognized by the YMCA for their RELAY work in Africa and the many 'peace-building' activities associated with this volunteer work.

In a year of economic havoc that rocked global markets and shook consumer confidence, Rotary International's most important asset – its members – steadily grew. As of 30 June, the end of the 2008-09 RI year, there were 1,234,527 members in 33,790 Rotary clubs. That's an increase of 3,044 members and 520 clubs from the previous year. |

Over $50,000 raised in TV auction
When the bidding concluded at the 2008 Rotary Auction on TV COGECO and when the telephones were finally silent and all of the volunteers had gone home - $50,145 had been raised by the Rotary Club of Windsor-St. Clair and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (Windsor-Essex County Chapter) for important service work in our community.

“This year I am looking forward to continuing the work of Windsor-St. Clair Rotary both in the community and through our international projects,” she says. Vicki is presently the Principal of Walkerville Collegiate Institute, and will be moving on to a position with the Greater Essex County District School Board in the fall as the Supervising Principal of Special Education.
Nearlyhalf of the residences in the Windsor community are not equipped with working smoke detectors and the Rotary Club of Windsor St. Clair will be teaming up with Windsor Fire and Rescue to do something about it.
